Today we travelled out to Lincolnshire to sab the Blankney hunt who met at Westfield Farm, Branston, just South of Lincoln.
The hunt surprised us by initially heading North towards the city. The hounds picked up a scent straight away and chased a fox for a few miles over several busy B roads and the A15, a main road heading into Lincoln. The hounds rioted into peoples gardens, upsetting local residents who screamed abuse at the hunt. Stressed looking redcoats and supportgathered the hounds, causing chaos on the road, before heading South into safer hunting territory.
Perhaps chastened by this experience the rest of the day was fairly quiet. Two small groups of foot sabs tag teamed effectively and kept the hunt in sight all day. The huntsman consistently hunted the hounds through coverts but watched by sabs picked up very little scent. Lincolnshire police were on hand, including the wildlife crime officer, but he was busy blaming sabs for taking him away from tackling hare coursing. We pointed out to him that we hadn't called him and were happy for him to return to this important work.
The hunt packed up at four after a relatively easy day, despite our small numbers, and we headed home happy with a job well done
